Banana Fish Season 2 is a Japanese crime-thriller anime television series, that is based on the manga series that was first published in May 1985 and aired until April 1994. After two decades, MAPPA, a Japanese anime studio, adapted the manga into an anime, which is released on July 6, 2018.
We also know Studio MAPPA from popular anime such as Jujutsu Kaisen, which has left its mark in recent years. After four years of publishing the anime’s last episode, fans are still curious about season 2.
After the highly acclaimed 1st season finale on December 19, 2018, many positive reviews were done for the series, and gained a fan base worldwide, and has an above-average score of 8.2 on IMDb. Let’s remember this series that has passed years and take a look at the story before the Updates of a second season.
It was an amazing hit with old and new fans alike. Since then, fans have been waiting for word on a second season. So far, Here’s what we know.
Banana Fish Season 2 Expected Plot (Spoilers)
The story revolves around Ash Lynx, a young man. When Ash was just a kid, his older brother Griffin Callenreese was serving in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He became afflicted with a strange madness and opened fire upon his squad. Griffin collapsed after the other members of the squad subdued him. He uttered the words banana fish.
Ash Lynx is the main character of the series, which has a remarkably charming appearance and outstanding fighting power. Ash is the leader of a street gang of children in New York City at the age of 17.
When Ash was a child, Ash’s older brother, Griffin Callenreese, who was serving in the US Army during the Vietnam War in 1973, turned mad one night and opened fire on his squad. The boy collapsed after speaking the words Banana Fish. He became mentally handicapped and started to live with his brother Ash, under his care in New York City.
Ash’s life took a turn when a dying man shot by his subordinate gave him a flask of a substance and an address in California and told him Banana Fish while dying. Ash starts to investigate Banana Fish with its source’s curiosity, which starts a chain of events in the story.
Banana Fish Season 2 Possible Release Date (Coming Soon)
Season 1 of Banana Fish, consisted of 24 episodes and aired from July 6th, 2018 to December 21st, 2018. Despite the success of Season 1, MAPPA has yet to announce a second season.
Will there be another season? It is highly unlikely, we think. First, Season 1 adapts all six parts from the original manga series. It ends on a note that suggests there is little to no chance of a second season. There are five side stories that relate to the manga. Two stories, Private Opinion, and Garden of Light could be adaptable into a second season.
These side stories are not enough material to fill a second season. MAPPA may decide to create original video animation (OVA), special episodes based upon side stories, instead of a new season.
MAPPA will not make an official announcement about the future of the show, so it’s impossible to know for sure. Our best guess is that Banana Fish season 2 if the anime gets renewed, could be released sometime in 2023. We are keeping our ears open for any news regarding Banana Fish’s future and will update this section as soon we learn of any developments.
Currently, at the time of writing, the studio MAPPA or the makers has not renewed the series for a second season. As we mentioned before, the series is a manga adaptation, and the manga is completed and not ongoing today.
The script of the series takes the manga from the 1980s to the 2000s, adding details such as smartphones and the Iraq war. Although this is the case, the anime is generally manga-based.
This brings to mind the question of whether there are enough scripts for Season 2. Unfortunately, the answer to this question is negative. The manga has 19 volumes released so far, and you can find an anime & manga matching chart below.

It was also hinted at the end of Season 1, which implied that there won’t be a second season of the anime. Five side stories could be made into a new anime series. The side stories might not be enough to make a second season. These side stories could be made into special episodes, rather than a new season. There is no way to know for sure, so we will have to wait and see if MAPPA releases new episodes or a season. If MAPPA decides not to renew the anime, it is likely that it will be in 2021.
As we mentioned earlier, there is not much manga left to read after completing the anime. It was pretty much a faithful adaptation of the manga. So, you can either read the manga from the beginning or you can catch up with the prequel and Epilogue.
- Garden of Light (Epilogue)
- Angel Eyes (Prequel)
